Disney showed off a teaser trailer for the third season of The Mandalorian at its D23 event on Saturday. While we don’t have an exact date for when the series will arrive on Disney Plus, the streamer previously said it will premiere in February 2023.

This is our first glimpse at the show’s upcoming third season and showed off not only Pedro Pascal’s title character, The Mandalorian, and his Force-using charge, but other familiar characters like Katee Sackhoff as Bo-Katan, Carl Weathers as Greef Karga, Omid Abtahi as Dr. Pershing, Emily Swallow as The Armorer, and Amy Sedaris as Peli Motto.

Disney released season two back in 2020, which has left those of us who already completed the first two seasons waiting a whole two years to see more adorable scenes with Grogu (aka Baby Yoda). But you’ll likely want to check in with the spin-off The Book of Boba Fett if you want to have any idea of what’s going on, as in The Mandalorian, Grogu and the Mandalorian were last seen saying goodbye to one another, and in this trailer, they seem to be a united family once again.

In addition to The Mandalorian, Disney also offered a trailer of the new Andor series at D23, which hits Disney Plus on September 21st. It teased the animated Tales of the Jedi as well and revealed a January 4th, 2023 release date for season two of The Bad Batch. We’re also expecting two new live-action Star Wars series in 2023: Skeleton Crew and Ahsoka. And we got the first trailernot teaser —for Willow, another Lucasfilm production.

Ikea’s record player made in collaboration with music supergroup Swedish House Mafia is set to go on sale on October 1st. The all-black device sports an unsurprisingly minimalistic look and will cost you $159.99 once it hits Ikea’s maze-like stores.

The record player is part of Ikea’s overarching Obegränsad (the Swedish word for “unlimited”) collection, which includes an equally-as-modern armchair, desk, LED work lamp, record stand, laptop stand, and shelving units, among other items. Ikea first announced the record player in June, marking the furniture maker’s second attempt at creating and selling a record player. The record player it was working on in 2018 never went on sale, but it looks like we have a much better shot of actually getting our hands on the device this time around.

The sleek Obegränsad record player is powered by USB-C.

Ikea hasn’t revealed too many technical details about the record player, other than that it’s powered by USB-C, is compatible with the Eneby Bluetooth speaker (albeit through a wired connection), and comes with a replaceable needle and cartridge. We’ll update this article if we find out more.

Update September 12th, 9:40AM ET: Updated to add that the record player will go on sale October 1st.

Football fans struggled to watch the first NFL Sunday Ticket game of the season due to issues with DirecTV’s website and app. While some users (including myself) reported seeing an error page when trying to access the Sunday Ticket website, others said they couldn’t even sign in.

But that’s not all — users reported a range of other issues, too, with some getting locked out of the stream and receiving an error message that says they’re located in an NFL stadium and can’t watch the stream. It’s unclear what exactly caused the issues with the Sunday Ticket stream, which started several hours leading up to the game and continued throughout the afternoon.

“We’re aware some customers are unable to access NFL Sunday Ticket online or through the app,” DirecTV spokesperson Alisha Laventure said in a statement to The Verge. “Our teams are working to resolve this, but in the meantime, we recommend satellite customers watch on TV.”

As of around 5:20PM ET, DirecTV started replying to some users’ complaints on Twitter, noting the issue has “been resolved” and that users can “return to watching this afternoon’s out of market games.” It appeared users were still having problems after this, however.

To make matters even worse, those who subscribe to the newly-launched NFL Plus subscription (which is supposed to let you watch live in-market games) said the accompanying app wasn’t loading game scores, and many users were also struggling to get their streams to work. Even football fans watching NFL RedZone on Sling TV and YouTube TV weren’t spared from outages. Sling claimed it brought RedZone back online, but noted viewers using a Samsung device released from 2017 to 2019 could still be affected. YouTube didn’t immediately respond to The Verge’s request for comment.

As noted by several users, issues like these apparently aren’t uncommon when streaming the game with DirecTV, which has held the rights to Sunday Ticket since 1994. These rights expire at the end of this football season, and several companies, like Google and Apple, are reportedly looking into securing Sunday Ticket. While they may be able to do football fans some justice by (hopefully) providing a more reliable stream, it still won’t solve the wider issue that is sports streaming.

Update September 11th, 5:49PM ET: Updated to add that SlingTV and YouTubeTV also went down during the games. Also added information about DirecTV’s response to customers.

Correction September 12th, 8:09AM ET: A previous version of the article stated that users were receiving an error message that said they had to be located in a stadium in order to watch the stream, when the message actually said that they were located in a stadium and couldn’t watch. We regret the error.

WALL-E, Pixar’s 2008 masterpiece, is being added to the Criterion Collection, a curated list of movies that are deemed to be “important classic and contemporary films.” Its induction means that the movie is getting a special-edition 4K Blu-ray release, which comes with a bunch of extras.

It’s not the first time the film’s been available in 4K, but — and I’m sorry for being this person — the box art for the Criterion version is just so much better than the standard 4K Blu-ray’s, in my opinion. It may also have a slightly better HDR master (it comes with Dolby Vision HDR and HDR10 Plus versions, vs standard HDR10 for the regular release), and its three-disc set includes things like a student film made by director Andrew Stanton, a documentary on Pixar, script notes, and production artwork.

Cover of the Criterion collection WALL-E blu-ray, which shows a pile of trash arranged to look like the movie’s main character, a robot that picks up trash.

Seriously, this is such a fun cover.
Image: Criterion

As Polygon’s Tasha Robinson points out, WALL-E is the first Disney / Pixar movie introduced to the collection, and is one of only a few animated movies that Criterion has selected. Personally, it’s hard to think of a Pixar movie that’s more deserving; despite being extremely short on dialogue, it’s able to capture the attention of kids and adults alike (though for different reasons — I first saw it when I was nine and loved the adorable robots; nowadays I watch it more as a cautionary tale mixed with the most wholesome love story ever).

WALL-E will become available from Criterion on November 22nd, alongside a 4K restoration of Spike Lee’s Malcolm X, which is another excellent — but very different — movie.

During the D23 Expo on Saturday, Lucasfilm revealed the final trailer for the Star Wars: Andor series that takes place before the events of the 2016 Rogue One film. Diego Luna will once again take on the role of the titular Cassian Andor, with the show set to follow his journey from a thief to a rebel.

Andor arrives on Disney Plus with a three-episode premiere on September 21st. Its first season is supposed to have 12 episodes in total, but we don’t know the release schedule for these episodes just yet.

Lucasfilm also teased its animated series of shorts, Tales of the Jedi, which debuts on Disney Plus on October 23rd. It also announced a January 4th, 2023 release date for the second season of its Clone Wars spinoff, The Bad Batch.

Disney Plus been on a roll with original Star Wars-related content as of late, with several planned shows, like Skeleton Crew, Ahsoka, and a third season of The Mandalorian already in the works.

Warner Bros. has debuted a new trailer for Black Adam, the DC universe movie starring Dwayne Johnson. If you watched the trailer from in July, you’ll recognize a lot of familiar footage here — Black Adam insists that he’s a villain, but there are some hints that he’ll have to choose to be a good guy in the end.

I’ll admit I don’t know all that much about Black Adam as a character, so I’ll point you to my colleague Charles Pulliam-Moore’s article about the July trailer for a bit more context there. The movie will also feature other DC characters like Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), Dr. Fate (Pierce Brosnan), Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell), and Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo), and this movie may not be the only time we see them and their been-around-much-longer-than-the-Justice League superhero team the Justice Society. In a tweet, Johnson says Black Adam is the beginning of “a new era in the DC Universe.”

Black Adam hits theaters on October 21st.

HBO has made the first episode of its Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon available to watch for free on YouTube, a marketing move that amusingly coincides with the release of Amazon Prime’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power on Friday last week.

Life is good for fans of epic fantasy right now, with House of the Dragon drawing in the largest audience ever for a new HBO series (and seemingly crashing the streaming service in the process). At the same time, The Rings of Power attracted 25 million global viewers the day it premiered, which also happens to be Amazon Prime’s biggest debut.

The success of Amazon’s J.R.R. Tolkien adaptation is likely at least partially why HBO is giving everyone a taste of its latest adventure into Westeros, tempting you to sign up for yet another streaming service — though, there are other reasonable explanations for the freebie besides its, ah, fortunate timing. The Game of Thrones series finale received catastrophic reviews from critics and audiences alike on Rotten Tomatoes, so while 10 million people tuned in for the House of the Dragon premiere, it’s understandable that some scorned fans of the franchise might need a little more convincing before jumping back on the George R.R. Martin hype train.

House of the Dragon is set almost 200 years prior to the events of the Game of Thrones series, detailing the downfall of House Targaryen and their rule over the Iron Throne. As expected, there’s an abundance of dragons, family squabbles, and long, flowing wigs for those who are disappointed by the more contemporary hairstyles featured in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

The watch link is unfortunately region locked and therefore unavailable outside of the US; however, UK fans can also watch the first episode for free thanks to an upload from Sky TV. Be wary that, as expected for a Game of Thrones spinoff, the series comes with a mature content warning.

Arcane, the popular Netflix animated series based on the League of Legends video game, has won the award for Outstanding Animated Program at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony, on top of the three other animation-related trophies it earned earlier this year.

This marks the first time that a streaming-exclusive show has won the award, despite growing competition in recent years. Arcane beat another streaming exclusive, Marvel’s What If…? (available to watch on Disney Plus), as well as non-streaming offerings from Bob’s Burgers, The Simpsons, and Rick and Morty, to the punch. Previous years have seen entries from other Netflix animated shows, such as Big Mouth and BoJack Horseman, nominated for the award.

The series was released back in November 2021 in partnership with League developer Riot Games. It focuses on a handful of characters from the popular MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena), including orphaned sisters Vi and Jinx, their childhood friend Ekko, and bickering inventors Jayce and Viktor. The episode that won the award is the sixth in the series, titled “When These Walls Come Tumbling Down.”

Arcane co-creator Christian Linke picked up the award during the ceremony and is quoted via Deadline saying, “Thank you for this. It’s a big deal for us as we come from video games. It’s been amazing to see the world embrace our characters.”

Fans of the series should be relieved to hear that a second season is in the works despite Netflix’s animation cull that occurred earlier this year due to a drop in subscriber numbers, though there’s no word on an anticipated release date. For those who can’t wait for an additional Arcane fix, check out the Bridging the Rift documentary series over on Riot Game’s YouTube channel about how the show was made.

National Cinema Day brought the biggest crowds to theaters of any day in 2022, which leads to one inevitable conclusion: people will go to movies when movies only cost three bucks. Who knew!

One thing not needed to get the butts back in the seats? New movies. August has been a month-long movie doldrums, the result of so many pandemic shutdowns and general supply chain issues. Tom Cruise always has the answer, though: the top grosser of the day was Top Gun: Maverick, which added about $6 million to its box office haul over the long weekend. (Cruise and co. have been keeping theaters afloat all summer, actually, bringing in $698 million overall since the movie’s release in May.) Spider-Man: No Way Home, which came out last Christmas, took second place in the box office. The best-performing new movie this weekend — Honk For Jesus. Save Your Soul.came in at #14.

But the real dark horse, the shark in the water nobody saw coming, was a little flick you might have heard of called Jaws. Playing in theaters around the country, the movie made about $2.6 million over the three-day weekend. That put it 10th for the weekend, just behind Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero and just ahead of Where The Crawdads Sing. (Like I said, it’s not a banner moment for movies.) On a per-theater basis, Jaws actually outperformed every other movie in theaters this weekend. Not bad for a movie that originally hit theaters in 1975 — and only made about $7 million its opening weekend.

It surely helped Jaws’ case that the movie was shown in 3D and IMAX for the first time ever. The 3D experience, which stereographer Jeremy Carroll told The Hollywood Reporter was designed to “make you feel like you’re in the water,” has been getting rave reviews. “We can play out the stereo to make you feel like you’re really in the water with the characters and the kids that are playing,” Carroll said, which is about as good a case for 3D movies as you’re ever going to hear.

Even at 47 years old, Jaws is a perfect symbol for the future of movies. It’s the film many credit as the original blockbuster, and was one of the reasons that studios started to put out their best and most successful movies in the summer. It’s a much slower movie than most recent big-budget hits, and I can safely say the special effects have gotten a lot better in the last half-century. But the things that make a great movie don’t really change, and Jaws remains a great movie.

There’s also a lesson in here for movie theaters in general, which are desperately looking for ways to convince people to leave their comfy couch and huge TV and go see movies in theaters instead. Cheap tickets are one very compelling case. So is new content: Spider-Man: No Way Home hit theaters again this weekend with 11 extra minutes of movie for fans to enjoy. But maybe so too are these occasional cultural moments, in which millions of people get to experience a film they loved — or maybe a classic they’ve never seen before — in a new way. Half the fun of streaming is wading back through all the movies of your childhood; who says movie theaters can’t do that too?
