If you\u2019re interested in one of Apple\u2019s new M2 MacBooks<\/a> but you\u2019re confused about which one you should buy, don\u2019t worry \u2014 it\u2019s confusing. The two devices are very similar, but they do have a few important differences. <\/p>\n
To get one big group of folks out of the way: if you\u2019re using this device for work on a consistent basis and your work primarily involves anything more intense than Chrome (for example, any program with Adobe in its name), you should buy a 14-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Pro or M1 Max<\/a> instead of one of these computers. Those laptops are much faster, with bigger screens and a much <\/em>more useful port selection, and those upgrades are going to be worth the extra money. <\/p>\n
But if you\u2019re not in that category and you\u2019ve got your heart set on an M2 machine, here\u2019s how to approach your decision. (And, of course, before you dive into any purchasing decision, you should know exactly why you\u2019re looking for a new computer, what\u2019s not working about your current computer, and what youu\u2019re looking for in a new one.)<\/p>\n
MacBook Pro vs. MacBook Air: price<\/h2>\nThe price difference between the MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro is not hugely significant.<\/p>\nThe Air starts at $1,199<\/a> for an eight-core CPU, eight-core GPU, 8GB of memory, 256GB of storage, and a 30W power adapter and goes up to $2,499<\/a> for an eight-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 24GB of unified memory, 2TB of storage, and a 67W adapter. <\/p>\n
The Pro starts at $1,299<\/a> for similar specs to the Air\u2019s base model \u2014 eight-core CPU, eight-core GPU, 8GB memory, 256GB SSD, and a 67W adapter (no 30W option here). However, it also maxes out at $2,499<\/a> (with similar specs to the top Air: eight-core\/10-core, 24GB memory, 2TB storage, same charger). <\/p>\n
The exact prices of configurations, and the differences between them, vary. Generally speaking, the price difference between the two models if you spec them as similarly as possible will be within $100. <\/p>\n
MacBook Pro vs. MacBook Air: chassis differences<\/h2>\nHere\u2019s a list of the differences between the M2 MacBook Pro and the M2 MacBook Air, some of which may matter to you and some of which may not. <\/p>\n\nThe MacBook Pro is a teensy bit heavier \u2014 it\u2019s 3 pounds (1.4 kg), while the Air is 2.7 (1.24 kg). I would say the difference is noticeable but not lifechanging, though the Air does feel a lot thinner.<\/li>\n
Both MacBooks come in Space Gray and Silver, while the Air also comes in Midnight (dark blue) and Starlight (gold). Beware of the Midnight color \u2014 it picks up fingerprints very, very easily.<\/li>\n
The MacBook Air has a larger screen \u2014 13.6 inches vs. the Pro\u2019s 13.3. (This means the Air\u2019s resolution is technically slightly higher, but it\u2019s not really noticeable.) The two have the same brightness and color coverage, but the Air\u2019s is a Liquid Retina display while the Pro\u2019s is the same LED-backlit IPS panel that last year\u2019s Pro had. <\/li>\n
The MacBook Air has a camera notch, and your cursor will disappear as it passes under it. So while you\u2019ll have extra screen real estate to work with on the Air, the notch can interfere with some menu bar apps. <\/li>\n
The MacBook Pro has a touchscreen OLED strip (the Touch Bar) at the top of its keyboard, while the MacBook Air has a row of physical function keys. Folks on the internet have all kinds of strong feelings about the Touch Bar. If you\u2019re not familiar, the TL;DR is that the Touch Bar gives users a way to access features like brightness, volume, emoji selection, Siri activation, and other toggles all in one place, but it\u2019s also slower for most people to use than physical keys and is easy to accidentally knock.<\/li>\n
The MacBook Pro only charges via USB-C, while the MacBook Air also has a MagSafe power port. This essentially gives you an extra port on the MacBook Air since one of the Pro\u2019s ports will be occupied whenever it\u2019s plugged in (both models have two Thunderbolt\/USB-4 as their ports). MagSafe connectors also pop out of their slots very easily, which means the Air is less likely to be yanked off your desk if somebody trips over your cord. <\/li>\n
The MacBook Air has a better webcam \u2014 1080p to the Pro\u2019s 720p. I don\u2019t find either one amazing, but the Air\u2019s does make me look crisper and less washed out.<\/li>\n
The MacBook Air has a number of power adapter options, including a 30W USB-C adapter, a 35 dual USB-C port adapter, and a fast-charge 67W adapter. The Pro only comes with a 67W version.<\/li>\nThe MacBook Air has a \u201cfour-speaker sound system\u201d while the MacBook Pro just has \u201cstereo speakers with high dynamic range\u201d. These sound the same to me as far as I can tell.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n  <\/p>\n    <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

MacBook Pro vs. MacBook Air: performance differences<\/h2>\nThe Pro and the Air have the same M2 processor and run the same macOS operating system. But that doesn\u2019t mean they\u2019ll perform identically because the Pro has something inside it that the Air doesn\u2019t: a fan. <\/p>\n
Machines need to keep their processors from overheating when they\u2019re working really hard. The Pro does this by turning on its fan. Since the Air can\u2019t do that, it needs to cap its processor\u2019s performance lower than where the Air does. In practice, that means that if you\u2019re running heavy loads on the Air for long periods of time, you will see a performance decrease. In our testing<\/a>, the Pro was able to run Cinebench R23 for 30 minutes with no decrease in performance, while the Air\u2019s performance began to drop shortly into its run.<\/p>\n
The Air also gets hotter than the Pro, though I will stress that it does not <\/em>get hot under Zoom calls, Chrome tabs, and most web-based loads you will have. But you may feel some heat on the Air\u2019s bottom or keyboard if you\u2019re running heavier programs on it for long periods of time. By contrast, I have never once felt the slightest amount of heat in the Pro\u2019s chassis, even while doing video stuff (nor have I ever heard noise from its fan).<\/p>\n
When it came to graphic performance, our testing saw a 26 percent increase in Shadow of the Tomb Raider <\/em>performance and over a two-minute difference in Premiere Pro 4K export time. <\/p>\n
The Pro also has a bigger battery and did deliver longer battery life in our testing. I generally get an average of 16 and a half hours of continuous use out of the M2 Pro and an average of 13 hours and 15 minutes out of the Air. Your results may certainly vary based on the work that you\u2019re doing, but based on my findings and those of others across the internet, I would expect that you\u2019ll get a couple additional hours out of the Pro.<\/p>\n

If I\u2019m using a device for this stuff and I\u2019m going to be using it all day, I\u2019d rather be on the Pro. That said, if you are dead set on a Mac, I would save up for an M1 Pro or M1 Max MacBook (or Mac Studio<\/a>) if you possibly can. They will save you a lot of time.<\/p>\n
I code: <\/strong>If you\u2019re mostly working on tasks like web design, Air is fine. Having MagSafe in an office setting can save you some stress, and that probably outweighs the performance benefit you\u2019ll see. If you\u2019re frequently compiling elaborate things, the Pro will probably save you some time. The Pro beat the Air by 10 seconds in the Xcode Benchmark<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I work with some pretty massive documents and spreadsheets, and the performance difference between the Pro and the Air was barely noticeable.<\/p>\n
I only use my computer for Netflix and emailing on my couch: <\/strong>Buy the Air. The better screen and lighter weight will be more beneficial to you than the extra performance.<\/p>\n

I want to run games on my MacBook<\/strong>: First of all, good for you. I support you and your dreams. Don\u2019t let the haters get you down. Second, get the Pro. You will see higher frame rates, you\u2019ll get more time gaming on battery, and the Air gets unpleasantly toasty if you\u2019re gaming for a while.<\/p>\n
I travel a lot: <\/strong>This one is tough. I think it\u2019s a question of whether extra battery life or a thinner, lighter device is more important to you: if it\u2019s battery life, Pro; if it\u2019s portability, Air. <\/p>\n
