In the short video, Fetterman makes an expected jab at Oz and the festering controversy over the authenticity of the Trump-endorsed candidate\u2019s Pennsylvania roots. <\/p>\n<p id=\"JfEmQV\">\u201cI\u2019m on TikTok now. Woo hoo!\u201d Fetterman says at the end of the video.<\/p>\n<p id=\"UThodz\">The campaign\u2019s decision to join TikTok comes on the heels of a series of viral social media videos attacking Oz. Earlier in the week. Twitter users dug up an old video of Oz shopping at a Redner\u2019s grocery store in Pennsylvania. While the video was intended to criticize the increase in inflation under the Biden administration, Oz was quickly mocked by Twitter users and the Fetterman campaign for his use of the word \u201ccrudit\u00e9\u201d and for seemingly conflating the names of two state supermarkets, Redner\u2019s and Wegmans, into \u201cWegners.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-float-right\">\n<aside id=\"AUJuPJ\"><q>\u201cIn PA we call this a\u2026 veggie tray\u201d<\/q><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"aFand5\">Responding to the video, Fetterman said, \u201cIn PA we call this a\u2026 veggie tray.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"SctUaF\">The Fetterman campaign announced on Tuesday that it had raised more than $500,000 just one day after Oz\u2019s crudit\u00e9 gaffe went viral.<\/p>\n<p id=\"HYMg0E\">TikTok began to gain traction in the US in 2018, and it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/21408407\/ed-markey-stans-fandom-politics-massachusetts-primary-joe-kennedy\">wasn\u2019t until the 2020 cycle<\/a> before politicians and their campaign arms started creating accounts and investing in the platform. This year, more politicians than ever are active on TikTok, but Democrats and left-leaning candidates have been the quickest to adapt. <\/p>\n<p id=\"WixFvC\">\u201cAs this campaign has since the start, we will continue to meet voters wherever they are at and have a whole lot of fun doing it,\u201d Joe Calvello, spokesperson for the Fetterman campaign, said in a statement to <em>The Verge<\/em> on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p id=\"1oFS6Y\">Pennsylvania is a must-win seat for Democrats hoping to secure a Senate majority following the midterm elections. In 2020, President Joe Biden won the state <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/2020-election\/results\/pennsylvania\/\">by little more than 1 percent<\/a>, effectively marking it as a toss-up this cycle. With only a few months before the November elections, the youth vote in Pennsylvania could be more necessary than ever if Democrats plan to win the state. <a href=\"https:\/\/circle.tufts.edu\/yesi2022\">A recent study by Tufts University in Massachusetts<\/a> found that Pennsylvania is one out of only a handful of states in which the youth vote could disproportionately decide the winner.<\/p>\n<p id=\"WtG1Od\">That outsized youth impact is a particular focus for Fetterman\u2019s team. Speaking to <em>The Verge <\/em>on Tuesday, Calvello said that the Fetterman campaign\u2019s TikTok account would be run by a Gen Z-aged staffer with around 25,000 on her personal account. By placing the account in a young person\u2019s hands, the campaign hopes to create content that feels natural for the platform. <\/p>\n<div class=\"c-float-right\">\n<aside id=\"6rSeUA\"><q>That outsized youth impact is a particular focus for Fetterman\u2019s team<\/q><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"wj5axt\">Still, the Fetterman campaign touts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politicspa.com\/poll-fetterman-shapiro-extend-leads\/111049\/\">a commanding lead against Oz<\/a> in recent polls, including a Fox News survey that showed Fetterman leading by 11 points. <\/p>\n<p id=\"ou5iaa\">While coming under fire for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/8\/17\/23308917\/tiktok-bytedance-midterm-elections-facebook-twitter-instagram\">failures to address harmful election misinformation<\/a>, political campaigns still view social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter as powerhouses for fundraising. In an interview with <em>The Verge <\/em>on Tuesday, Alex Kellner, managing partner director at Bully Pulpit Interactive, an online strategy firm, said, \u201cThere\u2019s still a lot of money being spent on Facebook, but maybe it\u2019s more for acquisition, fundraising, and communicating with your existing supporters to get them to volunteer and to be excited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"Ash6Vq\">TikTok\u2019s parent company, ByteDance, is based in Beijing, and the app\u2019s potential to leak sensitive US data to the Chinese government has been cause for alarm amongst Republicans and Democrats. Earlier this summer, the Biden administration banned the app\u2019s use on White House or federal government devices for security reasons, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/west-wing-playbook\/2022\/06\/22\/bidens-tiktok-dance-00041504\">as first reported by <em>Politico<\/em><\/a>. <\/p>\n<p id=\"s93VLe\">Fetterman\u2019s online jabs at Oz have hit a sweet spot on social platforms like Facebook, which increasingly surface low-production video content on user feeds.
