Activision has announced a showcase that it says will reveal the future of the Call of Duty<\/em> franchise. Dubbed Call of Duty<\/em> Next, the showcase will take place at 1PM ET on September 15th, broadcast on Twitch<\/a>, YouTube<\/a>, Twitter<\/a>, and Facebook<\/a>. <\/p>\n

According to the press release, the showcase will focus on the upcoming sequel<\/a> to 2019\u2019s Modern Warfare<\/em><\/a> as well as what it\u2019s calling Warzone 2.0<\/em> and the new Warzone<\/em> mobile experience.<\/p>\n

Though it\u2019s the premier jewel in Activision\u2019s crown, Call of Duty <\/em>has been underperforming lately. Activision Blizzard\u2019s proposal for a $68.7 billion acquisition by Microsoft revealed Call of Duty: Vanguard <\/em>badly underperformed and did not meet its Q4 expectations<\/a>. As a result, according to a report by Bloomberg<\/em><\/a>, next year\u2019s game has been delayed, disrupting Call of Duty<\/em>\u2019s yearly release schedule for the first time since 2005. <\/p>\n

Call of Duty<\/em> is also at the heart of a public spat between Xbox and PlayStation. As Microsoft is in the process of purchasing Activision Blizzard King, Sony is worried that Call of Duty<\/em>, a heretofore multiplatform game, could become an Xbox exclusive once the deal goes through. In a statement to The Verge<\/em><\/a>, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer said that Microsoft wishes to keep Call of Duty<\/em> on the PlayStation for \u201cseveral more years\u201d beyond its existing contract. In an interview with Game Industry.biz<\/em><\/a>, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan revealed that \u201cseveral\u201d in reality meant \u201cthree,\u201d also calling the deal \u201cinadequate on every level.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n
