Bitso, a Mexico City-based crypto exchange, is pledging to buy carbon offsets for every bitcoin transaction on its platform to compensate for the cryptocurrency\u2019s environmental toll. It may sound great in theory, but the idea also deserves a heaping dose of skepticism, given the sketchy reputation carbon offset efforts have earned over the years.<\/p>\n

Bitcoin\u2019s thirst for power has grown many times over, recently topping the electricity usage of several countries<\/a>, including Denmark and Chile, per Cambridge University estimates. Most of that energy (61%, according to Cambridge) comes from burning fossil fuels, and unfortunately Bitso can\u2019t do anything to stop the resulting emissions from entering Earth\u2019s atmosphere.<\/p>\n

Well, it could, say, ban energy-intensive tokens altogether. But that won\u2019t happen. Instead, Bitso is working with Moss.Earth, a S\u00e3o Paulo, Brazil-based carbon offsets company, to indirectly mitigate the emissions associated with transacting bitcoin and Ethereum-based tokens via its platform. The exchange plans to do so by buying tokenized \u201ccredits from conservation projects in the Amazon Forest in Brazil.\u201d<\/p>\n

In other words, Bitso will eat the cost by purchasing MCO2 tokens<\/a> minted by Moss. In turn, Moss will use the money in part to fund projects that preserve forests and fund sustainable agriculture. The company is certified by groups such as Vera, a nonprofit that sets standards for carbon credits. However, last year a Guardian and Unearthed<\/a> investigation found that Vera\u2019s methodologies were \u201cnot currently robust enough\u201d \u2014 Vera sharply criticized the report.<\/p>\n

For the numbers freaks: Bitso estimates each bitcoin transaction on its platform \u201cgenerates 29.4kg of CO2<\/sub> emissions, equivalent to 0.0294 MCO2 tokens, which Bitso will purchase at market price,\u201d a spokesperson told TechCrunch. There are a wide range of estimates that try to pin down the exact emissions tied to a single bitcoin transaction, and some are <\/span>far greater than Moss and Bitso\u2019s<\/a>, but that\u2019s beyond the scope of this story. <\/span>As for MCO2: It\u2019s an ERC20 token and has its own associated emissions, but Ethereum is more efficient<\/a> than bitcoin and the platform is also working toward a less thirsty proof-of-stake system<\/a>. Phew!<\/p>\n

With more than 4 million users, Bitso calls itself the most popular and largest platform of its kind in Latin America. Yet globally, CoinMarketCap ranked Bitso in 67th place<\/a> on its list of top exchanges at the time this story was published, reflecting the limited scope of the deal.<\/p>\n

Moss wants more. \u201cOur hope is that other projects within the space will follow suit to offset their carbon footprint,\u201d Moss CEO Luis Felipe Adaime said in a statement.<\/p>\n

So, will it work? Though the carbon credit industry is huge<\/a> and expected to balloon in size in the coming years, such efforts get tons of flak<\/a> for failing to live up to their perceived potential. Greenpeace, for example, writes<\/a> that \u201ccarbon offsetting plans are essentially PR plans,\u201d arguing that companies \u201cneed to stop carbon emissions from getting into the atmosphere in the first place.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lena Klaa\u00dfen, a Z\u00fcrich-based PhD researcher<\/a> in climate finance and policy, told TechCrunch over email that it\u2019s \u201cgenerally possible to offset emissions resulting from cryptocurrency-related activities,\u201d but she cautioned that \u201ctransparency on the calculation methodology, data quality, and offset selection are key to evaluate the quality of such a project.\u201d<\/p>\n

For its part, Bitso calls this a \u201cfirst step towards a larger sustainability strategy to address the environmental impacts of the crypto industry.\u201d Moss projects the deal \u201cwill save around 342 thousand trees in the Amazon, offsetting approximately 5,283 tons of carbon dioxide.\u201d In total, Moss says it has helped save \u201capproximately 152 million trees in the Amazon through internationally certified and audited projects\u201d since March 2020. The company claims to work with the \u201cmost reputable environmental projects,\u201d and it offers some details on how they operate via its site<\/a>. Still, trusting Moss requires some faith in Vera as well as carbon credits in general. And again, when it comes to carbon credits, skepticism abounds.<\/p>\n

Saving and planting trees are both wildly popular ideas, but many environmental and advocacy groups have criticized politicians\u2019 and corporations\u2019 arboreal fixation<\/a>, in part because they say there\u2019s simply not enough room for all the dang saplings we\u2019d need to mitigate the soaring emissions that come from harvesting and burning fuel.<\/p>\n
