Twitter is rolling out more \u201cgovernment-funded media\u201d labels on the accounts of international news outlets. These include the Australian Broadcasting Company (ABC Australia), Australia\u2019s Special Broadcasting Service (SBS), New Zealand\u2019s public broadcaster RNZ, Sweden\u2019s SR Ekot and SVT, and Catalonia\u2019s TV3.cat.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor more than 90 years the ABC has always been and remains an independent media organisation, free from political and commercial interests,\u201d ABC wrote on Twitter, in response the change.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, representatives from SBS worried that the label might lead Twitter users to believe that the outlet is editorially controlled by the government, which is not the case.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile we appreciate Twitter\u2019s motivations with regard to transparency on its platform, we believe a \u2018Publicly-funded media\u2019 label better reflects the hybrid public-commercial nature of our funding model and the fact that SBS retains full independence from Government in our news editorial and content decision making,\u201d a spokesperson said in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Twitter gave the BBC this \u201cpublicly-funded\u201d label, which seems less misleading than \u201cgovernment-funded.\u201d Yet Twitter still applied the \u201cgovernment-funded\u201d label to NPR, a network receiving 1% of its funding from the U.S. government (and at first, Twitter labeled NPR as \u201cstate-affiliated,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0a designation reserved for publications like Russia\u2019s RT<\/a>). NPR has left Twitter<\/a> as a result.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt this point I have lost my faith in the decision-making at Twitter,\u201d NPR CEO John Lansing told an NPR reporter<\/a>. \u201cI would need some time to understand whether Twitter can be trusted again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following this report, CBC joined NPR, PBS, and other newsrooms<\/a> in stepping away from Twitter, noting in a tweet<\/a> that, \u201cjournalism is impartial and independent. To suggest otherwise is untrue. That is why we are pausing our activities on @Twitter.\u201d<\/p>\n
