(This message was added in version 6.7.0.) in /home4/scienrds/scienceandnerds/wp-includes/functions.php on line 6114Source:https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2023\/04\/20\/outsourcing-giant-capita-fears-customer-data-stolen-during-ransomware-attack\/<\/a><\/br> Capita, the British outsourcing company that provides critical services for the U.K. government, says hackers may have accessed customer data during a cyberattack last month.<\/p>\n The London-based outsourcing giant, whose customers include the NHS, the U.K. military and the Department for Work and Pensions, said in a statement<\/a> on Thursday that its investigation into the March attack unearthed evidence of \u201climited data exfiltration\u201d which \u201cmight include customer, supplier or colleague data.\u201d<\/p>\n Capita hasn\u2019t said how many customers have been affected or what types of data were accessed. Russ Lynch, an agency spokesperson representing Capita, told TechCrunch the company would not comment beyond its statement.<\/p>\n However, a Sunday Times report<\/a> claimed that the Russian-speaking Black Basta ransomware<\/a> group, which claimed responsibility for the attack, published personal bank account details, passport photos and addresses, along with personal data belonging to teachers applying for jobs at schools.<\/p>\n The gang is also believed to be responsible for the recent attack<\/a> on U.S. satellite television provider Dish.<\/p>\n At the time of writing, Capita is not listed on Black Basta\u2019s dark web leak site, which ransomware groups typically use to extort companies into paying a ransom demand for not publishing stolen data.<\/p>\n Capita first confirmed<\/a> that it had suffered an \u201cIT issue\u201d in late March, before later admitting on April 3 that a \u201ccyber incident\u201d was to blame for the disruption, which left staff unable to access its VPN for logging in and Microsoft 365<\/a> services. At the same time, Capita claimed it had \u201cno evidence of customer, supplier or colleague data having been compromised.\u201d<\/p>\n The cyberattack also disrupted some services Capita provides to clients. Reports claim that local authorities, such as Barnet Council in London, experienced disruption to customer service lines, and companies that use Capita for call center services, such as cellular network O2, were also affected.<\/p>\n U.K. government services also experienced disruption, according to Cabinet Office spokesperson Conor Walsh, who told TechCrunch that the incident \u201cprimarily affected internal processes with minimal impact on government departments.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe are aware of the cyber incident which has affected Capita and continue to be in regular contact with the company,\u201d the spokesperson added. Capita holds \u00a36.5 billion ($8 billion) worth of public sector contracts, according to the Sunday Times.<\/p>\n In its latest update, Capita said that it has now restored \u201cvirtually all client services that were impacted\u201d and said it has reinstated employees\u2019 access to Microsoft 365.<\/p>\n Thursday\u2019s statement also confirms that hackers first compromised Capita\u2019s internal systems on March 22, around nine days before Capita \u201cinterrupted\u201d the breach on 31 March.<\/p>\n \u201cAs a result of the interruption, the incident was significantly restricted, potentially affecting around 4% of Capita\u2019s server estate,\u201d the statement reads. \u201cCapita continues to work through its forensic investigations and will inform any customers, suppliers or colleagues that are impacted in a timely manner.\u201d<\/p>\n The Information Commissioner\u2019s Office, which enforces the U.K\u2019s data protection laws, confirmed to TechCrunch that \u201cCapita has reported an incident to us and we are assessing the information provided.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n <\/br><\/br><\/br><\/p>\n
