\u201cThere\u2019s a ton<\/span> of stuff that really could be impacting the lives of everybody on Earth, that is not making it out of the lab and into practical application,\u201d said David Van Wie, founder and chief investment officer at Aventurine Capital Group<\/a>. That\u2019s how he summarizes the problem he is trying to solve with his IP-forward accelerator. He hopes that spinning out companies \u2014 and letting inventors and academics continue to do what they\u00a0<\/em>do best \u2014 is a winning formula.<\/p>\n

Aventurine focuses on where venture capital doesn\u2019t typically go: It gets in early to support people who aren\u2019t natural entrepreneurs and invests in IP for the long term using what it calls a Perpetual IP Income fund, or PIPI fund. If it sounds as if it\u2019s the antithesis of quick growth and timely exit, that\u2019d be accurate. But the team believes that\u2019s OK, and that perhaps VCs don\u2019t need to be in a big fat hurry all the time anyway.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a researcher who spent 20 years of their lives chasing a certain thing,\u201d said Joe Maruschak, the company\u2019s managing director of Aventurine\u2019s investment studio. That\u2019s how he described who Aventurine is looking to fund. \u201cThey caught the bug for chemistry, and they\u2019ve spent all of their lives going into chemistry. They\u2019ve got their Ph.D., got a job in university, and then discovered something.\u201d<\/p>\n

Central to Aventurine\u2019s thesis is that academics shouldn\u2019t have to be entrepreneurs to ensure that their discoveries or innovations can be developed and brought to market to eventually have an impact in the world. It recognizes that a researcher\u2019s skill set is not necessarily the same as a founder\u2019s, and that they shouldn\u2019t be forced to learn how to do it overnight.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
