\nMany big YouTube creators have expressed frustration with an increase in comment spam on their channels in recent weeks, including Linus Tech Tips, Jacksepticeye, and MKBHD. The problem has been particularly acute for these high-profile creators, who often see more malicious commenters impersonate them in an attempt to scam their viewers.<\/p>\n

\u201cYouTube has a problem. Spam,\u201d Linus Sebastian said to start a February 1st video<\/a> on his Linus Tech Tips channel. \u201cFrom crypto scams to health supplements to free Robux, it just keeps getting worse with each passing day.\u201d <\/p>\n
\u201cYouTube comments spam has been next-level out of control for months,\u201d reads the description for Marques \u201cMKBHD\u201d Brownlee\u2019s April 1st video<\/a> titled \u201cYouTube Needs to Fix This.\u201d<\/p>\n
\n<\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"eqNYJm\">YouTube comment spam can take many forms. Major creators are often concerned about spam that impersonates them, promises viewers something good for messaging them, and then directs individuals off YouTube in some way to eventually scam them.<\/p>\n<p id=\"wE8ZO5\">Other spam comments can be less overtly malicious but still annoying or potentially harmful. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=58l9hcyGsGI\">In a March 6th video<\/a>, Se\u00e1n \u201cJacksepticeye\u201d McLoughlin discusses how his channel will get copy-pastes of genuine-looking comments, but they\u2019ll be shared by users with names like \u201cT[A]P Me!! To Have [S]EX With Me\u201d. (If you see a profile with that name, do not click or tap on it.)<\/p>\n<div id=\"H5LjPX\">\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/58l9hcyGsGI?rel=0\" allowfullscreen=\"\" scrolling=\"no\" allow=\"accelerometer; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture;\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"kuHhxA\">YouTube does have many tools to combat spammy comments, and it removes a huge amount of them automatically. Using machine learning and human review, the company removed \u201cover 950 million comments for violating our policies around spam, misleading and scams\u201d in Q4 2021 alone, YouTube spokesperson Ivy Choi said in a statement to <em>The Verge. <\/em>\u201cThe vast majority\u201d of those removals were first detected by automated flagging systems,\u201d Choi said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"VSTvbH\">But those systems clearly haven\u2019t been enough, and YouTube seems to know it. Brownlee posted Friday about a new <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MKBHD\/status\/1512454491689435140\">experimental moderation feature<\/a> that will \u201cincrease strictness\u201d of potentially inappropriate comments that get automatically held for review. YouTube began testing the enhanced feature in December 2021, spokesperson Mariana De Felice said, and she noted that the company first rolled out the feature to hold potentially inappropriate comments for review <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.youtube\/news-and-events\/new-tools-to-shape-conversations-in\/\">in 2016<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"CNWWna\" readability=\"6.014440433213\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"6.014440433213\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This \u201cIncrease strictness\u201d content moderation tool is a new experiment from YouTube that\u2019s been in the works for a bit.
