Arcimoto, maker of pint-sized electric vehicles, has a new EV. By the looks of it, it\u2019s no joy ride.<\/p>\n

The Eugene, Oregon-based startup dodged bankruptcy<\/a> in February and strapped in its third CEO<\/a> in April. On Tuesday, the company shared its next chapter: a little truck called the MUV (a \u201cModular Utility Vehicle\u201d) with customizable rear storage space, a top speed of 75 mph, an estimated 102 miles \u201ccity range\u201d and just three wheels.<\/p>\n

Based on Arcimoto\u2019s\u00a0preexisting FUV (that is, \u201cFun Utility Vehicle<\/a>\u201c) platform, buyers can equip the new EV with a pickup-style bed or a fully enclosed storage box. Or they can strip it down to a flatbed \u201cin under 10 minutes,\u201d the startup claims.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Arcimoto said in a statement that the MUV is available now, starting at $23,500 a pop. The automaker is clearly focused on selling these vehicles in bulk, seeing as its website<\/a> points visitors to a fleet inquiry page \u2014 in lieu of a buy now button.<\/p>\n

Despite the pervasiveness of auto rickshaws around the globe (see: tuk-tuks), three-wheelers are a pretty rare sight in North America. That\u2019s a shame when it comes to climate change, because three-wheelers are generally smaller than their four-wheeled counterparts. Scaled-down vehicles can ship with smaller batteries and require less materials overall, so they emit less carbon pollution than big, hulking SUVs.<\/p>\n

One of Arcimoto\u2019s closest competitors, Electrameccanica, recently bailed<\/a> on its own three-wheeler over both technical and sales<\/a> \u201cbarriers.\u201d Electrameccanica voluntarily recalled<\/a> its flagship Solo EV in February, warning that drivers might suddenly \u201cexperience a loss of propulsion.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
