Jack Dorsey, Twitter\u2019s co-founder, says India \u2014 despite its status as the world\u2019s largest democracy \u2014 regularly issued requests for the social media giant to remove certain posts and accounts, often accompanying these demands with threats of legal repercussions in cases of noncompliance.<\/p>\n

\u201cIndia is one of the countries which had many requests around farmers protests, around particular journalists which were critical of the government,\u201d said Dorsey.<\/p>\n

In early 2021, Twitter was ordered to suspend hundreds of accounts and curtail the visibility of certain hashtags in India, after the Indian government issued threats of legal action against the US-based social media company. It was noted that the lion\u2019s share of accounts earmarked for suspension had voiced support for farmers\u2019 protests against newly proposed legislation.<\/p>\n
