In a statement given to TechCrunch, a TSMC spokesperson \u2014 who emailed from a generic press email account and repeatedly declined to provide their name \u2014 confirmed that a \u201ccybersecurity incident\u201d at one of the company\u2019s IT hardware suppliers, named as Kinmax Technology, led to the leak of \u201cinformation pertinent to server initial setup and configuration.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cUpon review, this incident has not affected TSMC\u2019s business operations, nor did it compromise any TSMC\u2019s customer information,\u201d the spokesperson added. \u201cAfter the incident, TSMC has immediately terminated its data exchange with this concerned supplier in accordance with the Company\u2019s security protocols and standard operating procedures.\u201d<\/p>\n

TSMC shared a copy of the communication it received from Kinmax Technology, an IT services and consulting organization that specializes in networking, cloud computing, storage, security and database management.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the morning of June 29, 2023, the Company discovered that our internal specific testing environment was attacked, and some information was leaked,\u201d Kinmax said in its notice. \u201cThe leaked content mainly consisted of system installation preparation that the Company provided to our customers as default configurations.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kinmax added that it \u201cwould like to express our sincere apologies to the affected customers,\u201d suggesting TSMC wasn\u2019t its only partner affected by the incident.<\/p>\n

Eric Huang, vice president of Kinmax Technology, declined to say how many of its customers had been impacted.<\/p>\n
