Whether you\u2019re trying to get rid of spam or avoid hearing from a former friend or ex, blocking someone\u2019s phone number is a vital tool for helping to preserve your privacy. We\u2019ve covered various methods of protecting yourself from robocalls<\/a>, spam, and other daily annoyances. But blocking a number is often the quickest and easiest way of shutting down unwanted digital intrusions.<\/p>\n
When you block a number, you\u2019ll no longer receive phone calls, texts, or FaceTime requests that come in from the blocked number. The person at the other end will go straight to voicemail whenever they call you, but this is their only clue that they\u2019ve been blocked. Texts will still appear to go through as normal \u2014 even though you don\u2019t have to deal with them. <\/p>\n
Blocked numbers are still able to leave voicemails, but these won\u2019t be shown in the standard visual voicemail list. Instead, they\u2019re separated into a \u201cblocked messages\u201d section that you can choose to ignore completely. <\/p>\n
On an iPhone, there are multiple methods for blocking a number, but I\u2019m going to cover the two apps where you\u2019d most often want to do so. <\/p>\n
How to block a number from the iPhone\u2019s Phone app<\/h2>\n\nOpen the Phone<\/strong> app.<\/li>\n
Tap on the Recents<\/strong> tab.<\/li>\n
When you see the number you wish to block, tap the encircled i <\/strong>on the right side of the screen. <\/li>\nAt the bottom of the next screen, you\u2019ll see the option to Block this Caller.<\/strong> Tap on that, and the number will be unable to reach you.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nHow to block a number from the iPhone\u2019s Messages app<\/h2>\nIf someone is annoying you via text (or you want to cross off another source of spam), it\u2019s easy to block a number directly from Apple\u2019s Messages app.<\/p>\n\nTap the sender\u2019s information at the top center of the conversation. <\/li>\n
Then tap on Info<\/strong>. <\/li>\nAgain, at the bottom of this page, you\u2019ll see the option to Block this Caller<\/strong> in red text.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/aside>\nHow to unblock a number on an iPhone<\/h2>\nIf you want to restore someone\u2019s ability to reach you, it\u2019s easy to remove any number from your blocked list.<\/p>\n\nOpen the Settings<\/strong> app.<\/li>\n
Then tap on Phone<\/strong>. <\/li>\n
Select Blocked Contacts.<\/strong>\n<\/li>\n
On the next screen, you\u2019ll see a list of numbers you\u2019ve blocked. There are two ways to remove one. You can either tap the Edit<\/strong> option and then the red minus symbol next to the number you wish to unblock, or, as a faster alternative, you can swipe left across any number to unblock it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n
