This week, it\u2019s Amazon\u2019s head of devices David Limp, who said that he doesn\u2019t want to live in a virtual world 24\/7, or even a few hours a day.<\/p>\n

Limp expressed similar views when interviewed last month by the Financial Times<\/em><\/a>, where he spent most of his time espousing his vision of ambient computing<\/a> \u2014 the idea that the computer is everywhere \u2014 as he\u2019s been keen to do over the last year and change. <\/p>\n
While speaking at The Wall Street Journal<\/em>\u2019s Future of Everything Festival, Limp was asked what he was thinking about the metaverse<\/a>. He said that while he does believe that there\u2019ll be \u201csome form of place-shifting\u201d in the future, he\u2019s focused on devices that \u201cenhance the here and now.\u201d He said that even with current tech like phones and wireless earbuds, it can be hard to communicate with his kids, even when they\u2019re in the same house. \u201cI want to try to work on technologies that bring people\u2019s heads up, get them to enjoy the real world about them, make the family a more communal experience.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nWhat even is a metaverse?<\/q><\/aside>\n<\/div>\nHe also said that the term \u201cmetaverse\u201d was almost impossible to pin down: \u201cif I asked these few hundred people what they thought the metaverse was, we\u2019d get 205 different answers. We don\u2019t have a common definition, it means a lot of different things to a lot of different people.\u201d When it comes to Meta, Mark Zuckerberg has tried to describe<\/a> what he means by \u201cmetaverse,\u201d but at this point he\u2019s pretty long on vision and short on concrete details \u2014 though he does say that AR glasses<\/a> will play a big role.<\/p>\n
For what it\u2019s worth, here\u2019s our definition<\/a> of the metaverse.<\/p>\n
Limp addressed AR glasses, saying that they\u2019re better than VR because you can at least see the real world. However, he said, \u201cI wouldn\u2019t like if it completely embeds everybody and distracts them from the here and now.\u201d<\/p>\n
Limp isn’t alone in critiquing Meta\u2019s proposed future. Last month, Snap\u2019s CEO said something very similar about how there\u2019s no one definition of \u201cmetaverse,\u201d and said that the company\u2019s \u201cbig bet is on the real world\u201d<\/a> where people can spend time together. Former head of Nintendo of America Reggie Fils-Aim\u00e9 said that \u201cFacebook itself is not an innovative company\u201d and predicted that people wouldn\u2019t want to spend all of their entertainment time in virtual reality. \u201cI look at the vision that\u2019s been to date articulated, and I\u2019m not a believer,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Of course, just because a lot of people in tech make fun of something doesn\u2019t mean that it\u2019s absolutely going to fail \u2014 after Apple announced the first iPhone, then-CEO of Microsoft Steve Ballmer ridiculed its lack of keyboard and price tag<\/a>. However, at least in my opinion, there\u2019s a difference between saying that a product isn\u2019t great for one reason or another and saying that it\u2019s fundamentally incompatible with the way people want to live their lives. At this point, it\u2019s hard to predict who will end up being right. But in my heart, and I can\u2019t believe I\u2019m saying this, I want it to be the guy from Amazon.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
